Local citations vs AI citations

In local SEO, a citation has meant a directory listing for fifteen years. AI search uses the same word for something else. An agency serving local businesses now needs both — and a third thing neither word covers.

Own a local business? The short version: ChatGPT pulls many of its local listings from Yelp. Check your Yelp page as carefully as your Google one.

Three things, not two

Local citationYour business name, address and phone number listed on another site — Yelp, the BBB, Angi, a chamber of commerce, a data aggregator.Semrush listing management, BrightLocal, Whitespark, YextConsistency and coverage across directories, which the local SEO industry treats as a Google local ranking factor
AI citationA web page an AI answer used and linked to as a source.AI visibility trackers, including Cite AIThe content and structure of the page, and how well it ranks in Google for the same question
AI mentionThe business named in an AI answer — often with a phone number and no link at all.Few tools separate this from a citation; Cite AI matches it to the Google Business ProfileGoogle map rank first, then engine-specific factors such as review depth on Gemini

For a local business, the AI names — it rarely cites

Ask ChatGPT for an emergency plumber and it answers with names, addresses and phone numbers, because the next step is a call. In one answer we captured, six Charlotte plumbers were recommended and the answer carried a single link — to a company it did not recommend. Count AI citations for those six businesses and every one scores zero, while all six were recommended to the customer. That gap is why mentions need their own line in the report.

Map rank is the bridge between the two

We checked 5,130 businesses Google ranks against what ChatGPT and Gemini named at the same spot. A business in the top three was named by ChatGPT 48% of the time and by Gemini 76%. Ranked 51st or lower, 1%. The AI mention sits downstream of the Maps ranking.

Directory listings sit upstream of it. Industry surveys such as Whitespark's Local Search Ranking Factors have long counted citation consistency among the inputs to map rank. We have not measured that link ourselves, so we will not put a number on it — but the chain runs listings → map rank → AI mention, and cutting the first step to chase the last one gets it backwards.

Four prompts across home services, health and legal, at 18 grid points around Charlotte and Columbus (72 readings), on ChatGPT and Gemini, captured on one day in August 2026.

Check Yelp, not just Google

ChatGPT's local map card is not Google's. In our captures, many of its listings arrived through a Yelp feed and linked back to the business's Yelp page, and we have seen Yelp category pages cited in Google's AI answers for local questions. We have not measured how much weight either carries — but a stale or unclaimed Yelp listing is no longer only a directory problem.

What to do with a local client

  • Keep the directory work — it feeds the map rank, and map rank is the strongest predictor of an AI mention we have measured
  • Check the client’s Yelp listing as carefully as their Google profile; it shows up inside ChatGPT’s local answers
  • Report AI mentions separately from AI citations, or a local client that is being recommended will read as invisible
  • Measure from the towns the client serves, not one reading for the metro — the answer changes across town
